Residence Permit (Independent Means)
Austria offers a residence permit for financially independent persons who can support themselves without employment. Subject to strict annual quotas and one of the most demanding systems in Europe. Applicants must prove substantial financial resources and comprehensive health insurance.
- Proof of sufficient passive income or financial resources
- Comprehensive health insurance covering Austria
- Proof of accommodation in Austria (owned or rented)
- Clean criminal record
- Basic German language skills (A1 level for initial application)
- Valid passport
- Must apply within annual quota allocation
- Cannot engage in any employment in Austria
- Subject to annual quotas - limited number available
- Must integrate (German language, civic knowledge)
- Must maintain financial requirements throughout stay
Processing time: 3-6 months
Fee: Approximately €150-200 application fee
Apply at Austrian embassy/consulate or, if legally in Austria, at MA 35 (Vienna) or district authority
