The Talent (Arts, Culture, Sports) Work Visa is a work-to-residence visa enabling foreign nationals with exceptional talent in arts, culture, or sport to live and work in New Zealand for up to 30 months, with a pathway to permanent residence. Unlike other New Zealand talent visas, this programme does not require employer sponsorship -- holders may work in any occupation for any employer. Applicants must be supported by a New Zealand organisation of national repute in their declared field and have an acceptable sponsor who guarantees accommodation and financial support. Applicants must be 55 years or younger.

Requirements
  • Exceptional talent in a declared field of art, culture, or sport
  • International reputation and record of excellence in the declared field
  • Current prominence in the field
  • Evidence that the applicant's presence will enhance New Zealand's achievements and participation in that field
  • Support from a New Zealand organisation of national repute in the applicant's field
  • An acceptable sponsor who guarantees accommodation and financial support (sponsor may be an individual, organisation, or government agency)
  • Must be 55 years or younger at time of application
  • Good health and good character
  • No minimum income requirement -- financial obligation falls on the sponsor
Required Documents
  • Valid passport (minimum 3 months validity after planned departure)
  • Passport-size photographs
  • Completed Talent (Arts, Culture and Sports) Sponsorship Form (INZ 1091) from acceptable sponsor
  • Supporting organisation endorsement (Section B of INZ 1091)
  • Evidence of exceptional talent: awards, qualifications, professional memberships, recommendation letters, press coverage
  • Police certificates from country of citizenship and any country of residence for 5+ years since age 17 (less than 6 months old)
  • General Medical Certificate (INZ 1007)
  • Chest X-ray Certificate (INZ 1096)
Duration & Renewal

The work visa is valid for up to 30 months and is not typically renewed. The intended pathway is to apply for the Talent (Arts, Culture, Sports) Resident Visa after 24 months of active engagement in the declared field. Holders must enter New Zealand within 3 months of visa approval and must complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD) upon arrival.

Family Members

Partner and dependent children cannot be included in the initial work visa application and must apply for their own visas separately (for example, a Partnership-Based Work Visa for partners). After the main applicant has been actively engaged in their declared field for 24 months, they may include their partner and dependent children (aged 24 or younger) in the Talent (Arts, Culture, Sports) Resident Visa application. Partners and children aged 16 and over must demonstrate English language competency through acceptable test results, English-speaking background proof, or the applicant may pay for English language classes on their behalf.

Tax Implications

New Zealand tax residents (present 183+ days in any 12-month period) are taxed on worldwide income. New migrants may qualify for a 4-year transitional tax exemption on most foreign-sourced income, excluding employment income earned overseas. New Zealand has no capital gains tax on most assets. Holders should register with Inland Revenue (IRD) for tax purposes upon arrival.

Application Process
  1. Secure an acceptable sponsor and obtain the completed Sponsorship Form (INZ 1091), including endorsement from a New Zealand organisation of national repute
  2. Apply online via the Immigration New Zealand website
  3. Submit the application with all supporting documents and evidence of exceptional talent
  4. Pay the application fee (from NZD $1,630)
  5. Processing: 80% of applications decided within 9.5 weeks
  6. Upon approval, enter New Zealand within 3 months
Path to Residence

After 24 months of active engagement in the declared field, holders may apply for the Talent (Arts, Culture, Sports) Resident Visa (from NZD $6,490), which grants indefinite residence. The residence application requires an Inland Revenue Summary of Earnings and financial records to evidence active engagement. From there, holders may apply for a Permanent Resident Visa. Applicants who have received any welfare benefits or assistance while on the work visa become ineligible for the residence visa. Study is limited to 3 months per 12-month period on the work visa unless a variation of conditions is granted.
