Gambia
Residence Permit Type A
The Residence Permit Type A is The Gambia's residence-only permit for retired foreign nationals and persons of independent means who wish to live in the country without engaging in gainful employment. Established under the Immigration Act (Cap 16:02), the permit is administered by the Gambia Immigration Department (GID). It targets retirees with pension income, individuals with independent financial means, and international students who can demonstrate they are financially self-sufficient. The Gambia issues three permit categories: Type A (residence only), Type B (residence and employment), and Type C (employment only). Type A is the appropriate pathway for those living on passive income or retirement funds.
Applicants must demonstrate sufficient financial means to sustain themselves in The Gambia without gainful employment. Proof of pension certificates and monthly allowances from outside the country is accepted. Unlike many other countries' retirement programs, The Gambia does not prescribe a specific minimum monthly or annual income threshold — the requirement is simply to show sufficient means.
Non-ECOWAS nationals must also obtain a separate Alien Identity Card alongside the residence permit.
- Valid passport (minimum 6 months validity, at least 2 blank pages)
- Completed application form (obtained from VISTA Bank)
- 2 passport-sized photographs for the permit
- 2 passport-sized photographs for the Alien Identity Card (non-ECOWAS nationals)
- Proof of financial means (pension certificates, bank statements, monthly allowance documentation)
- National identity card or sworn affidavit/consular card proving nationality
- Yellow fever vaccination certificate
The permit is valid until December 31 of the calendar year in which it is issued, regardless of when during the year it was obtained. This means late-year applicants pay the full annual fee for a shorter validity period. The permit must be renewed annually each January by resubmitting the application and paying the required fees.
Spouses and children under 18 years of age are automatically included in the permit at no additional cost. Non-Gambian dependants aged 18 and over must obtain their own residence permit and Alien Identity Card (if non-ECOWAS).
Holders of the Type A permit may not engage in any form of gainful employment in The Gambia. The permit is strictly for residence purposes only.
After being admitted into The Gambia by an immigration officer, applicants must obtain the prescribed application form from VISTA Bank, which has outlets at all GID issuing centres. The form must be authenticated by a Justice of the Peace appointed by the Ministry of Justice. The completed application, along with supporting documents and payment receipts, is then submitted to the Gambia Immigration Department in person at their offices in Banjul.
Approving officers appointed by the Director General conduct interviews to establish the applicant's nationality and verify all submitted information. Upon approval, the residence permit is issued.
Non-ECOWAS nationals are required to reside in The Gambia for up to 56 days following admission before a residence permit can be issued.
Fees:
- ECOWAS nationals: D3,000 plus D100 registration form fee
- Non-ECOWAS nationals: fees vary
- Alien Identity Card (non-ECOWAS): D2,500 plus D100
- Citizens of Mauritania, Guinea, Mali, and Senegal are exempt from permit fees
The GID operates Monday through Thursday from 08:00 to 16:00 and Fridays from 08:00 to 12:30.
Visa-exempt nationalities include citizens of the United Kingdom, EU member states, Commonwealth nations, and ECOWAS member states for stays under 90 days. Citizens of other countries must obtain a visa either through a Gambian diplomatic mission or at Banjul International Airport upon arrival. All travellers must possess a valid passport and evidence of yellow fever vaccination.
