Golden Residency Visa for Talented Individuals

Bahrain's Golden Residency Visa for Talented Individuals is a self-sponsored permanent residence permit for foreign nationals with recognized exceptional achievement in academic, entrepreneurial, scientific, artistic, sporting, or innovative fields. Launched in February 2022 under Decision No. 20/2022 as part of Bahrain's Economic Vision 2030, it is the only Golden Residency category that grants residency based purely on exceptional achievement — without prior residence in Bahrain, property ownership, employment history, or a minimum salary. Holders enjoy the right to work or run a business, sponsor family, and receive unlimited entry and exit privileges.

Importantly, there is no minimum stay requirement to maintain the validity of the Golden Residency — per the official NPRA/goldenresidency.gov.bh FAQ, holders can settle, work, or remain abroad without any annual presence conditions.

Bahrain's specialized talent committee reviews applications across six official categories:

1. Entrepreneurs — founders, scalers, or investors in businesses that drive economic growth
2. Researchers and scientists — individuals with significant contributions through groundbreaking research
3. Artists and creatives — recognized talent in visual arts, music, or literature
4. Innovators — pioneers in technology, science, or business who have developed groundbreaking products
5. Athletes — those with notable success such as championship wins
6. Other exceptional talent — individuals with extraordinary skills in areas such as leadership, entrepreneurship, or community service

• Recognition by Bahrain's specialized talent committee, a relevant government agency, or an accredited business incubator (for entrepreneurs)
• Minimum age of 21
• Proof of achievement: talent certificate, awards, patents, publications, competition results, or equivalent
• Academics only: PhD certificate and a higher-education degree in a priority specialization determined by the Higher Education Council
• Six-month bank statement as proof of financial capability (no minimum balance specified)
• Clean criminal record and good health
• Valid health insurance certificate issued in Bahrain

• Valid passport (minimum 6 months validity) with family information pages
• Clear copy of a talent certificate (academic, athletic, entrepreneurial, artistic, or research credentials)
• PhD certificate and higher-education degree (academics only)
• Patent documents (patent holders)
• Accredited business incubator approval (entrepreneurs)
• Valid health insurance certificate issued in Bahrain
• Six-month bank statement
• Previous residence permit and ID card (if applicable)

The permit is described by NPRA as permanent residency with no restrictions on length of stay. A standard administrative fee of BHD 300 applies every 10 years, provided the holder continues to meet eligibility criteria. Payment of the BHD 300 issuance fee must be made within 30 days of approval, otherwise the application is automatically cancelled.

Holders may sponsor immediate family members — spouse, children, and parents — under the Golden Residency. Dependents receive the same benefits, including the right to work and unlimited entry/exit. Each dependent is subject to the same BHD 5 application fee and BHD 300 issuance fee. Family applications are submitted through the "Golden Residency Visa Issuance for Relatives" eService.

Bahrain levies no personal income tax, no capital gains tax, and no corporate income tax on individuals. Golden Residency holders may apply for tax residency status upon meeting additional conditions determined by the National Bureau for Revenue.

Applications are submitted online via the eGovernment portal (services.bahrain.bh) under the Golden Residency Visa service for Talented Individuals. Applicants complete the form, upload documents, and pay the BHD 5 non-refundable application fee. Upon approval, the BHD 300 issuance fee is payable within 30 days (total BHD 305, ~USD 808). Processing takes approximately 10 working days. For applicants outside Bahrain, a Golden Entry Visa is issued first to facilitate entry, followed by in-country residency issuance. The key requirement is approval by Bahrain's specialized talent committee, a relevant government agency, or an accredited business incubator. The exhaustive list of qualifying authorities and incubators is not publicly published, so applicants should verify in advance whether their credentials and endorsements will be accepted. Holders receive a national ID card (CPR) upon establishment and are not tied to any single employer — they can change employment freely, freelance, or establish businesses. Since 2025, holders can also apply for work permits, expanding the program into an active gateway for employment.
