United Arab Emirates
Virtual Work Residence Permit
The UAE's Virtual Work Residence Permit allows foreign nationals employed by or owning companies outside the UAE to reside in the country while working remotely. The permit is self-sponsored — no local employer or guarantor is required. It applies across all seven emirates and is administered by GDRFA in Dubai and ICP in other emirates. The UAE levies no personal income tax, making it particularly attractive for remote workers.
- Employed by or owning a company registered outside the UAE
- Employees must hold a valid employment contract with at least 1 year remaining
- Company owners must demonstrate at least 1 year of ownership
- Minimum monthly income of USD 3,500 (via GDRFA/ICP federal scheme)
- Valid health insurance covering UAE residency
- Passport valid for at least 6 months
- No specific educational or professional qualifications required
- Coloured personal photograph (white background)
- Passport copy (valid 6+ months)
- Health insurance copy
- Medical fitness test results
- Proof of remote work outside the UAE
- Salary certificate showing USD 3,500+ per month
- Emirates ID receipt
- For employees: employment contract and last month's payslip, plus 3 months' bank statements
- For company owners: proof of ownership (1+ year) and 3 months' bank statements
- Abu Dhabi (via ICP/ADRO) requires 6 months of bank statements instead of 3
The permit is valid for 1 year and can be renewed by submitting a fresh application with all required documents. After expiry or cancellation, there is a 60-day grace period to remain in the country.
Residents staying outside the UAE continuously for more than 180 days face automatic visa nullification. If nullified, the holder must apply for a new entry permit and pay a fine of AED 100 for every 30 days spent outside the country.
Approved applicants may sponsor their spouse and children for the same period as the main permit. The expiry date of a dependant's visa cannot exceed that of the sponsor. No additional income requirement applies for sponsoring dependants.
The UAE does not levy personal income tax on individuals. Holders residing 180+ days may apply for a Tax Residency Certificate from the Federal Tax Authority, which can be useful for tax purposes in their home country.
Holders may only work remotely for entities outside the UAE. Any employment with UAE-based companies or clients is prohibited.
Processing time: 48 hours via digital channels
Fees: AED 740 total via GDRFA Dubai (AED 200 residence permit + AED 10 Knowledge Dirham + AED 10 Innovation Dirham + AED 500 inside-country fee + AED 20 delivery)
Apply online via the GDRFA smart services portal (smart.gdrfad.gov.ae) or ICP portal (icp.gov.ae) using UAE Pass, or in person at Amer Service Centers and Customer Happiness Centers. Upon approval, the holder receives an entry visa and must enter the UAE within 60 days. After arrival, complete the medical fitness test, biometric registration, and Emirates ID issuance within 60 days.
Note: Dubai also operates a separate "Virtual Working Programme" via the Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) with a higher income threshold of USD 5,000/month — that is a city-specific programme distinct from this federal scheme.
