Future Creation Individual Visa (J-Find)

The Future Creation Individual Visa, known as J-Find, is a Designated Activities residence status that enables graduates from top-ranked universities worldwide to enter Japan for job hunting and business startup preparation without requiring employer sponsorship. Launched on April 26, 2023 alongside J-Skip as part of Japan's strategy to attract global talent, the program provides a bridge for outstanding graduates to explore employment opportunities and prepare business ventures in Japan.

• Bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree from a university ranked in the top 100 on at least two of three global rankings: QS World University Rankings, Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and Academic Ranking of World Universities (Shanghai Ranking)
• Degree must have been awarded within 5 years before the date of application
• Minimum savings of JPY 200,000 (approximately USD 1,400)
• Minimum age of 18 years
• Detailed activity plan describing intended job-hunting or business preparation activities
• The Immigration Services Agency publishes an updated list of eligible universities annually

• Valid passport and recent photograph (4cm x 3cm)
• Graduation certificate or degree certificate from an eligible university
• Curriculum vitae (prescribed format)
• Description of intended activities (job hunting plan or business preparation plan)
• Bank statements or financial certificates proving savings of at least JPY 200,000
• Proof that the university qualifies under the ranking criteria

The initial period is 6 months or 1 year as determined by the immigration office. Extensions are possible up to a maximum total stay of 2 years. Renewal requires concrete evidence of ongoing job-hunting or business preparation activities such as job application records, interview schedules, or business plan progress. If a holder fails to secure employment or establish a business within 2 years, they must leave Japan.

Spouse and children may apply for Designated Activities status as dependants. Each dependant must apply separately with documentation of their relationship to the principal applicant. Dependants may apply for permission to work part-time (up to 28 hours per week). The dependants' period of stay is linked to the principal applicant's status.

Holders residing in Japan become subject to Japanese income tax. Those present for less than 1 year are classified as non-permanent residents and taxed only on Japan-sourced income and foreign income remitted to Japan. National Health Insurance premiums and National Pension contributions are mandatory for all residents staying 3 months or more. Residence tax applies at approximately 10% of taxable income.

From abroad, applicants apply at the Japanese embassy or consulate in their country of residence. Some embassies require a Certificate of Eligibility obtained through a representative in Japan, while others process applications directly. For applicants already in Japan under another residence status (such as Student or Dependent), a Change of Status application can be submitted at the regional immigration bureau. COE processing takes approximately 1-3 months, with visa issuance at a consulate taking about 1 week after COE submission.

J-Find holders may conduct job hunting, attend interviews, network, participate in internships, and prepare for starting a business including securing premises, establishing a company, and preparing business plans. Part-time employment is permitted to supplement funds for job-hunting or startup activities, but full-time employment is not allowed. Work in adult entertainment and similar restricted industries is prohibited.
