Self-Sponsorship Residence Permit (Retired Foreigner)

Bahrain's Self-Sponsorship Residence Permit for Retired Foreigners allows retired individuals aged 55 or above who have completed at least 15 years of service in Bahrain or another GCC country to reside in the kingdom on a self-sponsored basis for 2, 5, or 10 years. This is the most accessible retirement residency pathway in Bahrain, requiring only BHD 500/month (~USD 1,325) in pension or investment income. The permit does not authorize employment — it is designed purely as a retirement residence option.

The permit is available in 2-year, 5-year, or 10-year durations at the applicant's choice. It is renewable on the same conditions provided the income requirements and other eligibility criteria continue to be met. Payment must be completed within 30 days of approval or the application is automatically cancelled.

Family members can be sponsored under the separate Self-Sponsorship Residence Permit (Family) service. Family sponsorship applications are processed independently through the same eGovernment portal. Dependants are typically granted non-working residence permits.

The holder must not work for any employer in Bahrain's public or private sector. The BHD 500/month income must come from pension, investments, or other non-employment sources. For retirees who need the right to work, the Golden Residency for retirees is the alternative — though it requires a significantly higher pension (BHD 2,000/month for Bahrain residents or BHD 4,000/month for non-residents) plus property ownership of at least BHD 130,000.

Bahrain levies no personal income tax, no capital gains tax, no withholding tax, and no estate or gift tax. Residents may apply for tax residency status upon meeting conditions determined by the National Bureau for Revenue.

Applications are submitted online through the eGovernment portal at services.bahrain.bh. The application must be submitted by a guarantor or authorized representative — direct submission by the applicant is not possible. The application fee is BHD 5 (non-refundable) plus a residence permit fee of BHD 200 (2-year), BHD 400 (5-year), or BHD 600 (10-year). The retirement requirement of 15 years of service specifically in Bahrain or a GCC country means that retirees who worked only outside the GCC region do not qualify for this category. Overstay may result in fines and permit cancellation — the NPRA provides a dedicated service for self-sponsorship violators to settle late fees. The permit includes a re-entry visa component, allowing multiple entries and exits during the validity period. For retirees who meet the higher Golden Residency thresholds, that pathway is clearly superior due to the right to work, faster processing (5 vs 40 working days), and fewer ongoing requirements.
