Digital Nomad Status
Kyrgyzstan's Digital Nomad Status allows foreign citizens working remotely in information and communication technologies, software development, and related high-tech sectors to reside in the country without requiring a standard visa, work permit, or mandatory residence registration. Originally launched as a pilot project in August 2022 for citizens of six CIS countries, the program was permanently established in law in November 2024 and expanded to citizens of 61 countries in April 2025, including the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan, and South Korea. The program is administered by the Ministry of Labor, Social Security and Migration, with a dedicated online application portal launched in December 2025. There is no application fee for the status itself, making it one of the most cost-effective digital nomad programs available.
- Work remotely in an eligible field: software development, IT systems analysis and programming, IT exports, media arts (VR/AR, 3D design), animation and graphic design, IT product development, robotics and AI, computer/mobile game development, or esports
- Be a citizen of one of 61 eligible countries (includes USA, UK, Germany, Japan, South Korea, and visa-free CIS countries such as Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Moldova)
- Provide bank statements showing income from contracts over the past year, or service agreements for the last 2 years
- No fixed minimum income threshold is currently enforced
- No specific educational qualifications required
- Clean criminal background (no convictions for terrorism, crimes against humanity, or threats to national security)
- Scanned passport (all pages, in good quality)
- Digital facial photograph
- Bank statement showing income from services rendered under contracts for the past year, or service agreements for the last 2 years
- All documents in foreign languages must be translated into Kyrgyz or Russian with notarized verification
- Foreign documents may require consular legalization or apostille
The status is initially granted for 60 days and can be extended to 1 year. It is renewable annually for a total duration of up to 10 years. Citizens from visa-required countries must also obtain a type "DN" visa through the e-visa portal, which is valid for up to 6 months.
Spouses, minor children, and dependants of approved digital nomads may obtain entry permits and reside in Kyrgyzstan for the duration of the main applicant's status. There is no separate income requirement for dependants. The specific application process and documentation for family members is determined by the Cabinet of Ministers resolution.
Kyrgyzstan applies a flat 10% personal income tax. Individuals residing 183 or more days in a 12-month period become tax residents and are taxed on worldwide income. Non-residents are taxed only on Kyrgyz-sourced income. Digital nomads who register as individual entrepreneurs providing electronic services benefit from a reduced 2% tax on revenue. The State Tax Service maintains a registry of all digital nomad status holders.
- Submit your application online through the dedicated portal at dnomad.e-gov.kg
- Fill out the application form and questionnaire, and upload all required documents (passport scan, photograph, income documentation)
- The Ministry of Labor reviews the application within 7 working days from submission of a complete document package
- If corrections are needed, a 2-day correction period is provided
- Upon approval, you receive an electronic document with a QR code confirming your digital nomad status
- A personal identification number (PIN) is issued automatically through the ZHAAK civil registry system without requiring an in-person visit
- Citizens from visa-required countries must additionally apply for a type "DN" visa through evisa.e-gov.kg before travel
- The status becomes active upon crossing the border into Kyrgyzstan
The application is free of charge. Citizens from visa-free countries (Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Russia) can enter without a visa and activate their status upon arrival. Upon entry, status holders are exempt from mandatory residence registration for up to 60 days.
Holders work remotely for foreign employers or clients and are exempt from the requirement to obtain a work permit. Digital nomads may also establish businesses or register as individual entrepreneurs in Kyrgyzstan, with simplified access to government services through their automatically assigned PIN.
- The program is limited to professionals in specific technology and creative fields; general remote workers in non-tech fields are not eligible
- If the status is revoked, the holder must leave Kyrgyzstan within 15 days
- The status does not directly lead to permanent residency or citizenship
- Applicants are advised not to use Gmail addresses for registration on the application portal due to reported technical issues
