Annual Residence Permit Based on Bank Deposit

Jordan's Annual Residence Permit Based on Bank Deposit allows foreign nationals to reside in the country without employment, based on financial self-sufficiency demonstrated through a bank deposit at a Jordanian bank. The permit targets retirees, persons of independent means, and others with sufficient financial resources who wish to live in Jordan without working locally. Following major reforms in February 2025, the deposit requirement was halved from JOD 20,000 to JOD 10,000 for non-property owners, and eliminated entirely for property owners who have resided in Jordan for more than two years.

The permit is granted for 1 year and must be renewed annually through the same application process. Renewal must be completed within one month of expiration to avoid overstay penalties. After 10 consecutive years of legal residence, the Minister of Interior may grant a five-year renewable residence permit. The five-year permit becomes invalid after six continuous months of absence from Jordan.

Spouse and dependent children can be sponsored under the main applicant's personal sponsorship. They are included in the same application and covered by the same bank deposit requirement with no additional separate deposit per dependant. Each family member requires the same documentation, including passport copy, photographs, and medical examination for those aged 12 and above.

Residents spending 183 or more days in Jordan in a tax year are considered tax residents. Tax residents are subject to progressive income tax rates from 5% to 30% on Jordan-sourced income. Foreign-source income earned and kept abroad is generally not taxed unless remitted or connected to Jordanian business activity. A personal allowance of JOD 9,000 applies per taxpayer, plus JOD 9,000 for family members.

All applications must be submitted electronically through the Ministry of Interior e-services portal at eservices.moi.gov.jo (mandatory since July 2023). The applicant submits the online application with required documents. The Ministry of Interior reviews the application and issues an approval letter, then a letter is prepared and addressed to the relevant Jordanian bank to confirm the deposit. Once approved, the applicant visits the Residency and Borders Administration in person to complete processing, pay fees, and receive the residence card and passport stamp. In-person processing takes approximately 15 minutes once all documentation is in order.

Foreigners who fail to renew their residence permit within one month of expiration face fines of JOD 90 per month or JOD 3 per day for partial months. A separate fine of JOD 200 applies for failure to register with authorities within the required timeframe.

• GCC nationals and Egyptian and Syrian citizens are excluded from this permit category due to separate bilateral arrangements
• Jordan does not offer permanent residency through this pathway; citizenship by investment is a separate program
