Non-Immigrant Visa O-X (Long Stay 10 Years)
Thailand's Non-Immigrant Visa O-X (Long Stay 10 Years) is an extended retirement visa enabling foreign nationals aged 50 and over from 14 designated countries to reside in Thailand for up to 10 years. It requires significantly higher financial means than the standard O-A retirement visa — a minimum of THB 3,000,000 in Thai bank deposits or THB 1,800,000 combined with THB 1,200,000 in annual income. The visa is multiple entry with 5-year validity, extendable for another 5 years. Employment is strictly prohibited, though volunteer work is permitted.
- Minimum age of 50 years
- Must be a national of one of 14 eligible countries: Japan, Australia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Canada, or the United States
- Financial means meeting one of these options:
- Option A: Thai bank deposit of at least THB 3,000,000 (must be maintained in full for at least 1 year; thereafter not less than THB 1,500,000)
- Option B: Thai bank deposit of at least THB 1,800,000 plus annual income of at least THB 1,200,000; must accumulate THB 3,000,000 total in Thai bank within 1 year of arrival
- No criminal record in Thailand or country of nationality
- Free of prohibited diseases
- Thai health insurance with minimum THB 40,000 outpatient and THB 400,000 inpatient coverage, plus THB 3,000,000 COVID-19 coverage
3 sets required (1 original, 2 copies):
- Valid passport (6+ months validity, at least 1 blank page)
- Completed visa application form with 3 passport-size photographs
- Separate O-X application form
- Bank statement with guarantee letter showing THB 3,000,000+ deposit (or THB 1,800,000+ plus income evidence of THB 1,200,000+/year)
- Criminal record clearance (valid 3 months)
- Medical certificate showing no prohibited diseases (valid 3 months)
- Health insurance documentation per Thai General Insurance Association requirements
The initial visa is valid for 5 years with multiple entries. It is extendable for another 5 years at the Immigration Bureau before the initial period expires. Financial requirements must continue to be met: THB 3,000,000 maintained in full for the first year, then at least THB 1,500,000. Valid health insurance must be maintained throughout. Holders must report in person annually for qualification verification.
Spouses of any age may apply with a valid marriage certificate and all required documents. Children under 20 may apply with a birth or adoption certificate and a reduced set of documents. Dependants' visas are linked to the main applicant's visa period.
Standard Thai tax rules apply. Residents are taxed on income remitted into Thailand in the same calendar year it was earned. No specific tax exemption is attached to the O-X visa. Retirees not remitting income in the year earned generally have no Thai tax liability.
Applications are submitted at a Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate-General in the applicant's country of nationality. Some missions accept applications via the Thai e-Visa portal. Processing typically takes 15–30 business days. Upon approval, the applicant receives a multiple-entry visa sticker valid for 5 years. The visa fee is THB 10,000 (approximately USD 400, non-refundable).
The O-X visa is multiple entry, allowing unlimited entries and exits during the 5-year validity without needing a separate re-entry permit. Each entry permits a stay of up to 5 years. Financial maintenance requirements must still be met upon return.
Address reporting to the Immigration Bureau is required every 90 days via Form TM.47 (in person, by mail, or online). Failure to report on time incurs a THB 2,000 fine. O-X holders must also report annually in person for verification of qualifications and documents.
Employment of any kind is strictly prohibited. Volunteer work is permitted in accordance with Department of Employment guidelines.
