Long-Term Resident Visa (Work-from-Thailand Professionals)
Thailand's Long-Term Resident (LTR) Visa for Work-from-Thailand Professionals is a 10-year, multiple-entry residence visa designed for employees of established overseas companies who wish to live in Thailand while working remotely for their foreign employer. Launched in September 2022 and administered by the Board of Investment (BOI), the program was significantly updated in February 2025 with relaxed eligibility criteria including the removal of the five-year work experience requirement and a reduced employer revenue threshold.
- Employed by an overseas company that is either publicly listed on a stock exchange, or a private company operating 3+ years with combined revenue of at least USD 50 million over the last three years
- Employees of wholly-owned subsidiaries of qualifying multinational corporations may also qualify using parent company financial statements
- Minimum personal income of USD 80,000 per year over the past 2 years, demonstrated through official tax returns
- Reduced income threshold of USD 40,000 per year available for applicants with a master's degree or higher, intellectual property ownership, or Series A funding of at least USD 1 million
- No minimum work experience required (removed as of February 2025)
- Health insurance with minimum USD 50,000 coverage, or Thai social security enrollment, or bank deposit of at least USD 100,000 maintained for 12 months
- Valid passport with at least 6 months remaining validity
- Clean criminal record
- 10-year multiple-entry visa with no need for re-entry permits
- Exempt from personal income tax on foreign-sourced income brought into Thailand
- Fast-track immigration processing at airports with priority lanes
- Annual address reporting instead of the standard 90-day requirement
- No work permit needed as employment is with a foreign entity
- Holders may not work for Thai employers under this visa category
- No Thai work permit is granted
- All qualifying conditions must be maintained throughout the visa's validity
- Same-sex partnerships are currently not recognized for dependent visas
- Documents must be in Thai or English; translated documents must be notarized
Spouse and children under 20 years of age may be sponsored, with a maximum of 4 dependants per visa holder. Each dependant requires health insurance with at least USD 50,000 coverage or a bank deposit of at least USD 25,000 maintained for 12 months. Under the January 2025 update, eligibility is expected to expand to include parents and all legal dependants with no cap on numbers, pending a separate Ministry of Interior announcement.
Processing time: Approximately 20-25 working days total. Initial review takes 3 working days, qualification endorsement by government agencies takes up to 20 working days, and final visa issuance processing takes 1-3 working days.
Fee: 50,000 THB per person for the 10-year multiple-entry visa. BOI endorsement is free of charge. Fees at overseas consulates may vary.
How to apply: Submit an application online through the BOI portal at visa.boi.go.th or via VFS Global at ltr.vfsevisa.com. After qualification endorsement approval, collect the visa at TIESC in Bangkok or at a Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate-General abroad.
In January 2025, the Thai Cabinet approved major updates implemented through BOI Announcement No. Por.3/2568 (effective 4 February 2025). The minimum five-year work experience requirement was eliminated, and the employer revenue threshold was reduced from USD 150 million to USD 50 million. Dependent eligibility was expanded to include parents and all legal dependants with no numerical cap, pending a Ministry of Interior announcement.
