Talent Visa

Global Talent Visa

🎓 Qualifications
No salary or educational requirement — applicants must demonstrate exceptional talent or exceptional promise through endorsement from one of six approved bodies, or by holding an eligible prestigious prize (such as a Nobel Prize, Fields Medal, Turing Award, Booker Prize, Academy Award, or BAFTA)
  • Endorsement from an approved body, or named recipient of an eligible prestigious prize
  • Leader (Exceptional Talent) or potential leader (Exceptional Promise) in science, engineering, humanities, social science, medicine, digital technology, arts and culture, or — from 1 July 2026 — a broader design industry pathway
  • At least 18 years old; open to all nationalities
  • No minimum income, salary, or formal educational qualification required
  • No English language requirement at application stage (B1 required at settlement; B2 from 26 March 2027)
⏱️ Duration
Up to 5 years per grant (applicant chooses 1 to 5 years), with unlimited 1-to-5-year extensions and no cap on total time in the UK
👪 Dependants
Yes
Spouse, civil partner, unmarried partner (2+ years cohabitation or relationship), and children under 18; each pays GBP 766 plus the Immigration Health Surcharge and may work (except as a professional sportsperson) and study
🛂 Citizenship Path
Yes — after 4 years
Indefinite Leave to Remain after 3 years (Exceptional Talent, prize winners, or endorsement by Royal Society, British Academy, Royal Academy of Engineering, or UKRI) or 5 years (Exceptional Promise via Arts Council England or Tech Nation); British citizenship available 12 months after settlement

The UK Global Talent visa enables leaders and potential leaders in academia, research, digital technology, arts and culture — and, from 1 July 2026, a broader design industry — to live and work in the United Kingdom without a job offer or employer sponsorship. It replaced the former Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) category in February 2020, removing the annual cap on endorsements and expanding qualifying fields. The route is a settlement visa with unlimited extensions, no minimum salary, and the freedom to be employed, self-employed, or a company director from day one. In June 2025, the Government launched a Global Talent Taskforce backed by GBP 54 million over five years (administered by UKRI) to actively attract world-class researchers and innovators, covering 100% of eligible relocation and research costs including visa fees.

Requirements
  • Endorsement from one of six approved bodies, or named recipient of an eligible prestigious prize (such as a Nobel Prize, Fields Medal, Turing Award, Booker Prize, Academy Award, or BAFTA)
  • At least 18 years old; open to all nationalities
  • Valid passport or travel document
  • TB test certificate if applying from a listed country
  • No minimum income, salary, or educational qualification
  • No English language requirement at application stage
Endorsement Pathways

The six approved endorsing bodies cover distinct fields:

  • UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) — science, engineering, medicine, humanities, social science (fast-track and peer review)
  • Royal Society — science and medicine (peer review)
  • British Academy — humanities and social science (peer review)
  • Royal Academy of Engineering — engineering (peer review)
  • Arts Council England — combined arts, dance, literature, music, theatre, visual arts, architecture (via RIBA), fashion design (via BFC), and film and television (via PACT)
  • Tech Nation — digital technology

Applicants are assessed as either Exceptional Talent (established leader) or Exceptional Promise (potential leader). Researchers and academics have four endorsement pathways: eligible academic/research job offer (fast-track, 2 weeks), individual fellowship (fast-track, 2 weeks), UKRI research grant of at least GBP 30,000 over 2+ years (fast-track, 2 weeks), or peer review (5 weeks). From 1 July 2026, the appointments fast-track is simplified so that all PhD-level roles at an approved UK Higher Education Institution or research institute — where the applicant leads academic, research or innovation work, or performs research as a primary function — are eligible.

Winners of prizes listed in Appendix Global Talent: Prestigious Prizes can bypass endorsement entirely and apply directly for the visa. The lists cover 200+ awards across arts and culture, architecture, fashion design, film and television, digital technology, and the sciences. There is no time limit on when the prize was won.

Required Documents
  • Valid passport or travel document
  • Endorsement letter (within 3 months of issue) or evidence of an eligible prestigious prize
  • Typed CV (maximum 3 A4 pages)
  • Three recommendation letters from established experts (requirements vary by field)
  • Up to 10 pieces of supporting evidence (from the last 5 years for arts and culture)
  • TB test results if applying from a listed country
  • Certified translations for any non-English or non-Welsh documents
Fees
  • Endorsement application (Stage 1): GBP 561
  • Visa application (Stage 2): GBP 205
  • Total for endorsed route: GBP 766
  • Prestigious prize route: GBP 766 (no endorsement fee)
  • Dependants: GBP 766 each
  • Immigration Health Surcharge: GBP 1,035/year per adult, GBP 776/year per child under 18 — paid upfront for the full visa duration
  • Settlement (ILR): GBP 3,029 (+GBP 1,000 for super-priority 1-2 working day decision)
Duration & Renewal

The visa is granted for 1 to 5 years, chosen by the applicant. Extensions of 1 to 5 years are available with no overall limit on total time in the UK. For extensions, applicants must demonstrate they earned money in the UK in the field related to their endorsement or prize. Extension processing takes approximately 8 weeks from inside the UK.

Path to Settlement

Indefinite Leave to Remain (permanent residence) is available after:

  • 3 years — Exceptional Talent endorsees, prize winners, and all endorsees of the Royal Society, British Academy, Royal Academy of Engineering, or UKRI
  • 5 years — Exceptional Promise endorsees from Arts Council England or Tech Nation

Settlement requires passing the Life in the UK test (ages 18-64), meeting the English language requirement (currently CEFR B1 in speaking and listening, increasing to B2 from 26 March 2027 under HC 1691), and maintaining continuous residence with no more than 180 days absent in any 12-month period. Researchers endorsed by academic bodies or qualifying via a listed prize benefit from a research abroad exemption — absences for research purposes do not count toward the 180-day limit.

The Government's March 2026 "Fairer Pathway to Settlement" consultation proposes an earned settlement model with a 10-year baseline qualifying period for most routes, but Global Talent holders are expected to continue benefiting from accelerated settlement after 3 years.

Family Members

Eligible dependants include a spouse, civil partner, unmarried partner (with 2+ years of cohabitation or relationship), and children under 18 (or over 18 if already holding dependant permission). Each dependant pays GBP 766 plus the Immigration Health Surcharge. Dependants can work (except as professional sportsperson or coach), study, and travel freely. Dependant partners can apply for ILR after 5 years of continuous residence.

Employment & Restrictions

Holders may work as employees, be self-employed, run a company, volunteer, or study — with no sponsorship requirement and no need to notify the Home Office when changing or ceasing employment. The only work restriction is employment as a professional sportsperson or sports coach. No access to most public funds until settlement.

Tax Implications

UK tax residence is determined by the Statutory Residence Test. Individuals spending 183 or more days in the UK in a tax year (6 April to 5 April) are automatically UK tax resident and liable to tax on worldwide income. Those spending fewer than 16 days (or 46 days if not UK-resident in the previous 3 tax years) are automatically non-resident. Between these thresholds a sufficient-ties test applies. Non-residents pay UK tax only on UK-sourced income.

Application Process

The visa uses a two-stage online process via GOV.UK.

Stage 1 (Endorsement): Unless the applicant qualifies via a prestigious prize, they apply for endorsement and pay the GBP 561 fee. Processing times vary by field: 2 weeks for UKRI fast-track, 5 weeks for science/research peer review, 5-8 weeks for digital technology, and 8 weeks for arts and culture. If endorsed, the applicant receives a letter valid for 3 months. Refusals can be reviewed for free within 28 days.

Stage 2 (Visa): The applicant applies online for entry clearance (from outside the UK) or permission to stay (from inside the UK), paying the GBP 205 visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge. Biometrics are provided via the 'UK Immigration: ID Check' app or at a visa application centre. Stage 2 processing takes approximately 3 weeks from outside the UK or 8 weeks from inside. Both stages can be submitted simultaneously; if endorsement is refused, the visa fee is refunded.

Applicants inside the UK must not travel outside the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man while awaiting a decision on an extension or switch, or the application is automatically withdrawn.

Recent Changes
  • 1 July 2026 — A new design industry pathway under HC 1691 expands the Global Talent route to cover additional design roles not previously catered for, fulfilling the May 2025 Immigration White Paper commitment. The provisions had not yet been incorporated into Appendix Global Talent as of the 8 April 2026 update.
  • 1 July 2026 — The appointments fast-track is simplified (agreed with the British Academy, Royal Academy of Engineering, and Royal Society): all PhD-level roles at approved UK HEIs or research institutes qualify where the applicant leads academic, research or innovation work, or performs research as a primary function.
  • 26 March 2027 — The English language requirement for settlement rises from CEFR B1 to B2 across Appendix Global Talent (via Appendix KoLL). A transitional clause preserves B1 for earlier applications.
  • November 2025 (HC 1333) — 27 prestigious prizes added and 1 removed; architecture endorsement criteria broadened to allow group members and shortlisted/nominated applicants.
  • June 2025 — Global Talent Taskforce launched with GBP 54 million over 5 years, plus GBP 25 million for Turing AI Global Fellowships and GBP 30 million for the Royal Society Faraday Discovery Fellowship.
