Global Talent Visa

The UK Global Talent visa enables leaders and potential leaders in academia, research, digital technology, arts, culture, and — from March 2026 — design to live and work in the United Kingdom without a job offer or employer sponsorship. It replaced the former Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) category in February 2020, removing the annual cap on endorsements and expanding qualifying fields. The route is a settlement visa, meaning holders can eventually apply for permanent residence. In June 2025, the Government launched a Global Talent Taskforce backed by GBP 54 million in funding to attract world-class researchers and innovators.

• Endorsement from one of six approved bodies, or evidence of an eligible prestigious prize (such as a Nobel Prize, Fields Medal, Turing Award, or Booker Prize)
• Valid passport or travel document
• Must be at least 18 years old
• TB test certificate if applying from a listed country
• No minimum income, salary, or educational qualification requirement
• No English language requirement at application stage

The six approved endorsing bodies cover distinct fields:

• UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) — science, engineering, medicine, humanities, social science (fast-track and peer review)
• Royal Society — science and medicine
• British Academy — humanities and social science
• Royal Academy of Engineering — engineering
• Arts Council England — combined arts, dance, literature, music, theatre, visual arts, architecture, fashion design, film and television, and design (from March 2026)
• Tech Nation — digital technology

Applicants are assessed as either "Exceptional Talent" (established leader) or "Exceptional Promise" (potential leader). Specific criteria vary by endorsing body and field.

• Three recommendation letters (requirements vary by field)
• Up to 10 pieces of supporting evidence
• TB test results if applying from a listed country

The visa is granted for 1 to 5 years, chosen by the applicant. Extensions of 1 to 5 years are available with no overall limit on total time in the UK. For extensions, applicants must demonstrate they earned money in the UK in the field related to their endorsement. Same fees apply for extensions.

Indefinite Leave to Remain (permanent residence) is available after 3 years for those endorsed as Exceptional Talent or endorsed by the Royal Society, British Academy, Royal Academy of Engineering, or UKRI. Those endorsed as Exceptional Promise by Arts Council England or Tech Nation qualify after 5 years. Settlement requirements include passing the Life in the UK test, meeting the English language requirement (currently CEFR B1, increasing to B2 from March 2027), and maintaining continuous residence (no more than 180 days absent in any 12-month period). Researchers endorsed by academic bodies benefit from an exemption where absences for research purposes do not count toward the 180-day limit. Settlement application fee is GBP 3,029. British citizenship is available 12 months after settlement.

The Government's March 2026 "Fairer Pathway to Settlement" consultation proposes an earned settlement model with a 10-year baseline, but Global Talent holders are expected to continue benefiting from accelerated settlement after 3 years.

Eligible dependants include a spouse, civil partner, unmarried partner (with 2+ years of cohabitation or relationship), and children under 18. Each dependant pays GBP 766 plus the Immigration Health Surcharge. Dependants can work (except as professional sportsperson or coach) and study in the UK. Partner settlement is available after 5 years of continuous residence.

Holders may work as employees, be self-employed, run a company, volunteer, or study. No sponsorship is required, and there is no need to notify the Home Office when changing or ceasing employment. The only work restriction is employment as a professional sportsperson or sports coach. No access to most public funds until settlement.

UK tax residence is determined by the Statutory Residence Test. Individuals spending 183 or more days in the UK in a tax year (6 April to 5 April) are automatically UK tax resident and liable to tax on worldwide income. Non-residents pay UK tax only on UK-sourced income.

The visa uses a two-stage online process. In Stage 1, the applicant applies for endorsement through GOV.UK, paying the GBP 561 fee. The Home Office forwards the application to the relevant endorsing body. Processing times vary: 2 weeks for UKRI fast-track, 5 weeks for science/research peer review, 5-8 weeks for digital technology, and 8 weeks for arts and culture. If endorsed, the applicant receives a letter valid for 3 months. In Stage 2, the applicant applies online for entry clearance or permission to stay, paying the GBP 205 visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge. Both stages can be submitted simultaneously. Stage 2 processing takes approximately 3 weeks from outside the UK or 8 weeks from inside. If the endorsement is refused, a free review can be requested within 28 days.
